| EN European standards for ceramic floor and wall tiling. Voluntary standards and essential requirements: the CE mark The EN European standards on ceramic floor and wall tiling apply both to materials (ceramic tiles, adhesives and grout) and to the design and installation of a tiled surface. The relevant standards have all been developed by a single Technical Committee (TC): TC 67 “Ceramic tiles”. The reason why a single Technical Committee was chosen to cover all these areas (tiles, adhesives, tiling) was because ceramic tiles are not independent materials in their own right but are constituents of a system, namely the tiled surface. The quality and performance of ceramic tiles must be evaluated within the context of the tiled surface as a whole and the other components in the system (adhesives and grout). TC 67 was set up more than 25 years ago and its secretariat is held by UNI (Italian National Standards Organisation). At the present time, TC 67 is chaired by Prof. Giorgio Timellini, Director of the Italian Ceramic Centre in Bologna. TC 67 has set up 4 Working Groups (WG): • WG1, WG2 for Ceramic tiles • WG3 (chaired by Dr. G. Squinzi, Mapei, Milan) for adhesives and grouts • WG4 (chaired since 1999 by Prof. G. Timellini, Centro Ceramico, Bologna) for tiling. View the details of European standards in the attached table It is a well-known fact that standards are voluntary tools. However, standards EN 14411 and EN 12004 also contain a “harmonised section” specifying the essential requirements that products – respectively tiles and adhesives – must possess in accordance with Directive 89/106/EEC on CONSTRUCTION PRODUCTS. The CE Mark is affixed to indicate that a product meets the essential requirements. It is obligatory in order for a product to be placed on the market. So although conformity with standards its voluntary, conformity with the harmonised annex is required by law. The Directive 89/106 is applicabled to ceramic tiles from 2005. |
