The Italian Ceramic Tile Industry Documentation Centre, consisting of a museum and a library, is a cultural project created that aims to make an exclusive, essential collection of tiles available to the public at a single location of key national and international interest. The Centre coordinates aspects of an archival and documentary nature with the product’s historical background. The museum assembles specimens of the most important Italian ceramic tiles from three standpoints: creative and artistic; technology and research; marketing and diffusion. These three aspects have taken on different degrees of importance in different historical periods. To offer visitors a broad picture of all the important aspects of ceramic tile production, the museum houses sample illustrating almost all product types, along with the procedures, history, development, aesthetic qualities and marketability of tiles. The displays are organised schematically so that the existing areas can be expanded at any time or the exhibits integrated with new and more specialist areas. The library is an integral part of a single “Documentation” project consisting of both products and texts of various kinds. It contains the most comprehensive documentation on the Italian ceramic tile sector in existence, including manuals, technical publications, surveys and books on ceramic tiles and their usage, production and standards. Through conventions with the Museum System of the province of Modena and the Interprovincial Library System, the available documentation can be consulted by library users anywhere in Italy. |
