The new ISO 9000 quality system standards, known as “Vision 2000”, constitute a rationalisation of the various existing standards in order to revise the basic structure of the standards themselves.

The change is evident even from the title, which talks of “Quality management systems”. The aim of this is clearly to establish principles, guidelines and criteria for company management, thereby superseding the concept of a standard that serves solely for the purpose of certification. The standard must in fact be useful for improving company management.

This has led to the decision to produce two standards as a “consistent pair”:
• UNI EN ISO 9001, “Quality management systems – Requirements”, which constitutes the reference for certification purposes;
• UNI EN ISO 9004, “Quality management systems – Guidelines for improving performance”, which expands on the points of standard 9001 and gives companies suggestions for improving their performance.

The normative framework is completed by publication of the basic standard:
UNI EN ISO 9000, “Quality management systems – Fundamentals and vocabulary”.

In the introduction (i.e. before proceeding to the various definitions), UNI EN ISO 9000 states the principles of quality management:
• Customer focus
• Leadership
• Involvement of people
• Process approach
• System approach to management
• Continual improvement
• Factual approach to decision making
• Mutually beneficial supplier relationships

These quality management principles form the basis for standards on quality management systems within the framework of the ISO 9000 family.

The new UNI EN ISO 9001 standard has already been published and will replace the old standards of 1994.
Certified companies have until the end of 2003 to adapt to the new standard.
